He received <i>amrit</i>, the <u>Kh</u>&#257ls&#257 rites of initiation, from his uncle Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh, then high priest of the Harimandar at Amritsar. He, along with his brother Thar&#257j Si&#7749gh, fought against the Mu<u>gh</u>als in Amritsar and avenged the execution of Bh&#257&#299 Man&#299 Si&#7749gh by slaying his tormentors.
